Teknomadz is a program that has had many guises over the years. Overall, this program entailed the recruitment of Aboriginal youth from the inner city and local reserves into digital media, dance, and performance training workshops which culminated into the making of multimedia productions.
Elements of this program involve the hybridization of powwow and hip hop; traditional and futuristic concepts. It was an innovative exploration and celebration of contemporary Aboriginal culture, the artists compared and contrasted various traditional and contemporary cultural elements in an examination of current and possible future cultural survival strategies for Aboriginal cultures.
This was an important opportunity to bring both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people together in a creative environment. It was important to reach younger Aboriginal audiences with this piece to reflect the issues, concerns and artistic practices relevant within their own communities in addition to providing them with tools for engaging further in their own cultural expression.
The creation of work in video, audio & digital media art for the program provided professional development opportunities for Aboriginal artists and a critical platform for the new media & artistic communities.
