Keith is from Cote First Nation, Saskatchewan his late mother's reserve, and his late father was from the Gordon's First Nation, Saskatchewan. His roots are of Saulteaux and Cree descent. The first fifteen years of his life were spent on the Gordon's First Nation.
Reflecting back on those experiences, his interest in art came at a very young age on the reserve when he used found and discarded objects to make three-dimensional art. Throughout the last forty years Keith has maintained a passion for art creating pieces with natural materials from the land. He has experimented with various mediums such as hide, stone, bone, antler, beads, mirror etchings, inks and paintings on canvas and hides. Work, family and art have been the focus of Keith's life for the last thirty-four years since moving to Regina in 1970. Through experimentation with different medium he has found the most passion for various types of rock, drawing his interest based on spiritual themes and dreams to create story in stone. His themes run two-fold as all Keith's works portray more than one character; usually two opposing forces melded together in a struggle. As examples he carves animals on one side of a stone and a face on the other. He enjoys working in large-scale rock carvings with the intent of creating multi-dimensional forms with rock. Future plans include the creation of traditional men and women's dress with hide and quill. Drum making and performance based projects are envisioned for the future. |
