Michael grew up on the Piapot First Nation Reserve north of Regina. His interest in filmmaking was formed in his childhood while he surreptitiously spent summers at the drive-in movie theatre in Fort Qu'Appelle.
In 1985 Michael became involved in the production of a video about a heavy metal band, a project of the Rainbow Youth Center in Regina. He graduated from high school at the Beauval Indian Residential School in 1986. Director Stewart Margolin of the CBC movie of the week "Medicine River" hired Michael in his first stand-in role. In June of 1992 Michael successfully auditioned for the television series "North of 60". During the next six years he would play the character Nathan Golo, the son of a bootlegger, on "North of 60". In 1996 Michael would play the lead male for a music video produced for Pam Tillis by Country Music Video award winner Steven Goldman. He had undertaken acting roles with the idea that he would gain an education in what interested him the most, filmmaking. In May, 2003 he successfully completed the Kodak-Eastman Cinematography course in Detroit, Michigan. Michael joined the Saskatchewan Film Pool Board of Directors in 2002 and has since given workshops in filmmaking. He is currently the committee chair for Splice TV, a showcase for independent filmmakers on SCN. |
