Sheila was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Her ancestry consists of Cree and Inuit on her mother's side and a Scottish father. Sheila completed her secondary education in her home community of Chisasibi. Although, she considers being from Chisasibi, James Bay, Quebec where her late mother resided, she moved to Regina at the age of sixteen to study Indian Fine Arts at the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College. She has been teaching at the First Nations University of Canada (formerly SIFC) since 1986 where she currently teaches studio classes in both Traditional and Contemporary art forms. As an artist, Orr evokes a variety of themes reflecting First Nations issues from the cultural, social, political, and environmental contexts'. Drawing from both personal and cultural experiences she exhibits works in both group and solo exhibitions. Sheila's works have been exhibited in such places as the Norman Mackenzie Art Gallery, The Little Gallery, Wanuskewin Heritage Park, the Saskatchewan Cultural Exchange Society, Sâkêwêwak Artists' Collective and most recently at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C. Her mediums include two- and three-dimensional works in painting (acrylic/oils), beadwork, porcupine Quillwork, and installations. |
